The MAJ Story

So Far..

"Mark Anthony Jones" also known by his stage name MAJ, is an American singer, musician, songwriter and performer.

Born and raised in New York City, MAJ began singing and dancing at the age of 5.
He went on to write & record his first collection of songs by the age of 12, and by the age of 14 he was performing in and around New York City's Greenwich Village.
After winning several local talent competitions, including two consecutive first place victories at Harlem's World Famous Apollo Theater, MAJ was ‘discovered/mentored' by New York City music impresario & owner of NYC's legendary 'Planet Sound' recording studios, Jon Grossbard & his wife Hope.

ln 1993, MAJ was invited to the White House, to perform at the first inauguration of Bill Clinton, the 42nd president of the United States.
During this period he also toured Europe and Asia extensively, recorded several albums as a 'musician for hire', and wrote music for television and film. (Most notably, several seasons of the hit TV series "Sex in the City")
ln 2001, MAJ signed a 6-year recording contract with Jay Z' Roc-A-Fella' Records.

Disillusioned by the harsh realities of the 'Big Time' Music Business,
MAJ moved to Scandinavia in 2004.

2005--2006
MAJ starred on the London stage in a musical based on the life of Marvin Gaye.

2006--2008
MAJ performed with his live band at a weekly event called 'Funkatek' at Copenhagen's most popular nightclub 'Vega'.

He also taught 'Funk History' master classes at Universities & Hip-Hop/Street Dance Schools across Europe, as well as recording several albums with various artists as a 'guest' vocalist/producer/musician.

2009-Present
MAJ moved to the U.K. and became a die-hard proponent of Analog recording. On any given day he can be found recording new sounds on vintage tape machines, drum machines, drum kits, keyboards, guitars, tapes and various other 60's-70's paraphernalia.

A 'self taught' multi-instrumentalist, MAJ cites Jimi Hendrix, James Brown, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Michael Jackson and Rod Temperton as his primary musical influences.

MAJ has written, produced, and/or performed all over the world both as a solo artist & with some of the most influential artists of today including:

Mark Ronson, George Benson, Jay Z, Janet Jackson, Chaka Khan, Nuyorican soul, The Bucketheads, Roy Ayers, Sade, Donna Summer, Maxwell, Masters At Work, Common, Kid Creole & the Coconuts, Erykah Badu, Martha Reeves, Nikka Costa, Meshell Ndegeocello, Maceo Parker, The Roots and the list goes on and on.

MAJ is currently working on his as-yet-untitled 'Aquarian Outcast Records' debut album & a documentary entitled..
‘The Funk King of Greenwich Village’.
